Consumers adapt to advert SMS shortcodes

Consumers are rapidly adapting mobile shortcode numbers as a way to respond to adverts or other media, according to research from analyst firm M:Metrics. The company found with 29.1% of mobile users in Spain responded this way each month, followed 18.5% of UK users, 10.1% in France, 7% in the US and 3.4% in Germany.

SMS shortcodes let users interact with ad, print or TV media by texting in a key word to a 5 digit number, for instance to claim a special offer or enter a competition. "These numbers are not unlike what we saw in email response during the mid-1990's as the Web emerged an advertising medium," said Will Hodgman, CEO, M:Metrics.

"The growing adoption of major brands using SMS and the substantial consumer response rates indicate a couple of important trends: mobile as a commercial medium is on steroids; and multimedia convergence is real."

Philips shines some new lights

Philips currently is demoing various concept products at its Simplicity Event 2006 expo this week in London, some of which may or may not see the light of day. Spotted are the new Drag Draw (pictureleft), a new light-emitting pen that will let you make crazy illustrations on any surface, so you can unleash that fantasy of scribbling up your bedroom wall without doing any permanent damage. This really is great for my children and will save me a lot of time and money in repainting these walls over and over again ;-)

The next one are a pair of spherical weights (picutre middle) that glow pink and include athletic sensors that monitors your workout progress. Finally the Versa Tiles (picture right), a series of moveable hexagonal tiles to lay down on a floor that creates a game.

Excellent "2.0" Interactive Marketing campaign by Nikon

Today Nikon launched a microsite (http://www.stunningnikon.com/dslr/) which displays the best photos taken by amateurs they selected from extremely popular fotosharing site Flickr. Nikon provided a number of talented Flickr users with the new digital camera D80 to show Nikon how they would use the camera. They also encouraged Flickr users to tag their best photos for the Nikon "stunning" gallery. The best pictures were used in this microsite and also in this three page advertisement in Business Week. Brilliant.
